The revamped DC Universe's first Justice League movie will be based on the seminal comic book series DC: The New Frontier, if a new rumor is to be believed. The rumor comes via industry scooper KC Walsh. It claims that DC Studios co-chair and co-CEO James Gunn is currently developing an as-yet-unannounced Justice League reboot inspired by New Frontier, late writer-artist Darwyn Cooke's six-part period epic published in 2004. Walsh also referenced a related report by fellow insider Jeff Sneider, which adds that The Flash director Andy Muschietti is in talks to helm Gunn's Justice League movie, which will supposedly feature New Frontier antagonist The Centre as its main villain. DC: New Frontier was previously adapted as Justice League: The New Frontier for the DC Universe Animated Original Movies direct-to-video series. However, as Gunn is yet to publicly confirm that a New Frontier-influenced Justice League movie is in the works, any talk of a live-action retelling of the award-winning series should be treated as pure speculation for now.Related: James Gunn Fuels Speculation About DC's Fantastic Four Analog, The Terrifics

That said, there's certainly scope for a Justice League film within Gunn and Safran's initial slate of DCU content. Gunn previously revealed that the first wave of DCU movies, TV shows and video games, which is titled "Chapter One: Gods & Monsters," includes two secret projects. It's possible that one of these projects could be a Justice League reboot, although there's currently no hard evidence to support this. It's also worth noting that Gunn has openly acknowledged the influence of classic DC Comics stories, such as All-Star Superman, on "Gods & Monsters." Gunn is yet to explicitly cite DC: The New Frontier among the direct source material for the DCU's first phase, though.

James Gunn Debunks Superman: Legacy Rumors

Whether New Frontier is indeed an influence on "Gods & Monsters" will likely be cleared up in the near future, given Gunn's track record for swiftly debunking false DCU rumors on social media. Gunn has tackled misinformation surrounding the DCU head-on since assuming control of DC Studios alongside Safran in late 2022. This includes addressing inaccurate casting reports regarding Superman: Legacy, which Gunn himself is slated to write and direct. The latest of these reports claimed that Percy Jackson star Logan Lerman was the frontrunner for the Superman part, however, Gunn subsequently stated this was not the case.

Several other young actors' names have also been bandied about online in connection with Superman: Legacy's titular role, only for Gunn to dismiss them, as well. Little is known about the reboot at this stage, other than that it features a younger incarnation of the Man of Steel and is slated to premiere in July 2025.
