Gunn's tweet follows a revelation he and Cavill discussed a non-Superman DCU role. Gunn said he's open to working on other projects with The Witcher star following his announcement DC is working on a new Superman movie, focusing on an earlier point in the superhero's life and confirming Cavill wouldn't star in the role. A Goodbye to Cavill's Superman

Cavill subsequently issued a statement on his Instagram confirming he won't reprise Superman, concluding a decade-long run donning the blue and red suit. He first played Superman in the 2013 film Man of Steel, immediately making him a household name. Cavill's Superman later appeared opposite Ben Affleck's Batman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016, as well as Justice League the following year. Following an extended hiatus, Cavill made his Superman return in Dwayne Johnson's Black Adam, starring in a cameo that was kept top secret until the movie's premiere.

However, soon after Black Adam's release, reports suggested Warner Bros. executives weren't happy with Johnson's hyping up of the Cavill cameo or his future as Superman. Furthermore, weeks after Gunn and Peter Safran were announced as co-heads of DC Studios, news spread that the Man of Steel sequel would be shelved, as well as Wonder Woman 3, starring Gal Gadot.
