The Suicide Squad director James Gunn revealed that a second spinoff series is currently in development for HBO Max.

In an interview with Deadline, Gunn stated, "We're working on something else now, another TV show that's connected to that universe." The director did not divulge any more information concerning the series, adding only, "I can't quite say.

The report also revealed Gunn approached HBO Max with the idea for another series built around one of the characters in Suicide Squad. However, the series is in  the very early stages and nothing has yet been written or greenlit. It's worth noting that HBO Max is "high on it" based on Gunn's enthusiasm. When pressed, Gunn teased, "I can't say anything. It is connected to this universe, and I don't think it will be the same genre as Peacemaker; it won't be as much a comedy as Peacemaker, but it will be in the same universe."

Peacemaker is currently airing on HBO Max. The series is a spinoff of The Suicide Squad, which introduced the titular antihero, and takes place after the film, following the reveal that Peacemaker survived an his wounds. Peacemaker, played by John Cena, is an extremely nationalistic killer who joins Project Butterfly. The show has been praised by critics, who cite the show's humor and Gunn's direction.

The Suicide Squad saw the introduction and subsequent demise of several supervillains and antiheroes, including Rick Flag, who perished at the hands of Peacemaker-- which some have criticized. In response, Gunn recently stated, "People constantly are writing on Twitter about how awful [Peacemaker] is and how mad they are that he killed Rick Flag — and I may get shit for saying this — but what he was doing, he had a reason for doing it."

He continued, "[Peacemaker] kills Rick Flag in The Suicide Squad because there's a piece of evidence that he believes will cause the world a great amount of disturbance and death and violence. He's covering up the truth... So if you believe in the truth being out there no matter what, you definitely don't agree with that."

Gunn teased in the recent interview that there is a good chance Peacemaker will receive a second season. "We're the biggest show in the world right now," he said.

New episodes of Peacemaker air Thursdays on HBO Max.
