Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn confirmed how long Thor was with the Guardians after the events of Avengers: Endgame.

A fan tweeted at Gunn, asking what happened to the Guardians' old ship, the Benatar, and sought clarification on how much time has passed between when we saw the team in Thor: Love and Thunder and the events of the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The director claimed that the Benatar is in the garage, and revealed that their new ship, the Bowie, is much larger. He added that the Guardians were only with Thor for a few weeks before embarking on a separate adventure, and claimed a long time has passed since then.

While the Guardians of the Galaxy were only in 2022's Thor: Love and Thunder for a few scenes, writer Jennifer Kaytin Robinson and director Taika Waititi put work into presenting them, searching for the parallels between all the characters when writing the script, and were especially interested in the similarities between Chris Pratt's Peter Quill and Chris Hemsworth's Thor. "Looking at all that Thor has lost and all that Quill has lost, there is a lot of overlap there," Robinson said. "It felt like a natural place to have Quill be this voice in Thor's head that can push him toward his arc for the movie."

How The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special Ties In

After leaving Thor in the first few minutes of Love and Thunder, the Guardians seemingly travelled back to Knowhere to make it their new home, as seen in The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. In fact, Gunn claimed that he used the Disney+ special to introduce several plot lines that will be important in Vol. 3. "In a way, the Holiday Special was a Trojan Horse for me to sneak in stuff that becomes important in Vol. 3, so I don't have to spend a lot of time at the beginning of that movie explaining it," Gunn explained. The Bowie was another plot point he snuck into the holiday special, as well as the fact that Cosmo the Spacedog is a new member of the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Now that these plot points have been established, the stage is set for the Guardians to embark on their most dangerous adventure yet in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Their newest mission will pit them against foes such as Adam Warlock and the High Evolutionary, and, according to the official synopsis, "could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them."

Thor: Love and Thunder and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special are available to stream on Disney+. Meanwhile, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 releases in theaters on May 5, 2023.
