Fans of television holiday specials may not want to rejoice just yet, but director James Gunn revealed he'd love produce a “Guardians of the Galaxy” Christmas show. However, he admitted he'd pull inspiration from an unusual place.RELATED: Does Part of "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" Take Place on Earth?Responding to a question on Twitter, the writer and director of "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" said he's discussed the possibility with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, adding, "We both find the idea fun and funny."

Asked by another fan what a "Guardians" special might look like, Gunn referenced the infamous 1978 “Star Wars Holiday Special." As it turns out, Gunn doesn’t want to replicate that sci-fi musical, but he likes the strange, off-kilter TV event as a child and would want to recapture that memory rather than the product itself.

That show was certainly something to behold. The special, which has never seen an official video release, is widely considered one of the most outlandish and confusing products associated with the "Star Wars" franchise. The special sees Han Solo and Chewbacca visiting the Wookiee homeworld of Kashyyyk to celebrate the vaguely defined holiday Life Day and meet Chewbacca’s family: father Itchy, wife Malla and son Lumpy. The special includes numerous musical numbers (one of which was sung by Carrie Fisher to the tune of the “Star Wars” main title theme) and a stilted, animated interlude that acts as the debut of Boba Fett.

What exactly Gunn would draw from this special is unclear, but under the director’s guidance “Guardians of the Galaxy” found massive success in updating the sci-fi tropes of the ‘70s and ‘80s, charming audiences worldwide. Perhaps given the time and attention it deserves, a “Guardians” Christmas special could be something to remember for all the right reasons.

Arriving May 5, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” is a production of Marvel Studios directed by James Gunn and starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, Chris Sullivan, Sean Gunn, Sylvester Stallone and Kurt Russell.
