The Suicide Squad director James Gunn recently shot down rumors that he's developing a DC Extended Universe film based on the Gotham City Sirens comic book series.

"You might be getting ahead of yourself. Yes Margot [Robbie] & I have discussed working together again," Gunn wrote on Twitter in response to a fan asking about the project. "But I've never discussed nor considered GCS, so, therefore, speculative articles aside, haven't encountered any rights issues around the non-existent project. No sobbing emojis needed."

Gunn's response came after the fan tweeted at the director, along with art from the Gotham City Sirens series, and suggested, "If you're not bringing catwoman to gotham city sirens because of complications, just make a harley movie and make ivy as supporting role. how are you gonna make a gcs WITHOUT CATWOMAN she's the face of the group. It's not that difficult TRUST."

The tweet exchange came more than a year after director David Ayer, who helmed 2016's Suicide Squad, more or less confirmed that a Gotham City Sirens movie was put on indefinite hold at Warner Bros. The director said at the time, "No, I think it's on pause."

First announced in 2016, the Gotham City Sirens film was supposed to center on the trio of Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy and Catwoman. However, Warner Bros. ultimately pushed the film to make space for 2020's Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), which saw Margot Robbie reprising the role of Harley, alongside Jurnee Smollett as Black Canary and Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress.

Published by DC Comics, the Gotham City Sirens comic book series was written by Paul Dini and featured art by Guillem March. The first issue of the series was released in June 2009 as a part of the Batman: Reborn relaunch and consisted of 26 issues. Catwoman went on to receive a new ongoing title written by Judd Winick and drawn by Gotham City Sirens artist Guillem March. Meanwhile, Harley Quinn became a member of the revamped Suicide Squad series and Poison Ivy is featured in the new Birds of Prey comic book series.

Directed by Cathy Yan from a script by Christina Hodson, Birds of Prey stars Margot Robbie, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Rosie Perez, Ewan McGregor, Steven Williams, Derek Wilson, Dana Lee, Francois Chau, Charlene Amoia, Chris Messina and Matthew Willig. The film is streaming now on HBO Max.
