The Green Arrow is a long-time member of the Justice League and first appeared in More Fun Comics #73 (Nov. 1941). Created by Mort Weisinger and George Papp, the character enjoyed modest success until the 1960s, when a reinvention by artist-writer team Neal Adams and Dennis O'Neil solidified him as a DC staple. Despite this popularity, he didn't make an appearance in live-action until Smallville, where, portrayed by Justin Hartley, he featured as a major character across the later seasons of the show. Green Arrow then took center stage in 2012, with the Stephen Amell-led series Arrow. Airing on The CW for eight seasons, Arrow kicked off an entire connected universe of DC television and initially aimed to introduce a realistic take on Oliver Queen and other comic book characters.

Green Arrow's Previous Big Screen Attempts

Attempts have previously been made at a Green Arrow movie. In 2008, Green Arrow: Escape from Super Max was announced, with a script by David S. Goyer and Justin Marks. The film would have featured Oliver Queen arrested for a crime he didn't commit and forced to escape a high-security prison with the help of villains he had put away. Goyer has stated that he believes the project was ahead of its time, before villain team-up movies such as The Suicide Squad, and before Marvel had considerable success with its own more obscure characters.

The Black Canary movie, which many have described as a logical place to introduce Queen, is yet to announce a release date and many fans are concerned it may be in danger after the cancellation of Batgirl. In light of these concerns, Warner Bros. Discovery has reassured fans that the film remains in development.
