Twitter is awash with fans convinced that James Gunn just teased Lobo's DC Universe debut.Gunn sparked speculation that Lobo is about to make the jump to the big screen by sharing an image of the infamous bounty hunter on Mastodon. Created by Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen, Lobo first appeared in 1983's Omega Men #3. Slifer and Giffen originally envisioned Lobo as a villain, however, the character soon evolved into an anti-hero, headlining his own solo series from 1993 to 1999. Lobo has also appeared in a variety of DC-inspired media including the SYFY series Krypton, where he was played by Emmett J. Scanlan. Gunn has yet to comment on whether Lobo is indeed set to star in an upcoming DC Studios production, which means that reports to this effect should be treated as pure speculation for now.Related: Marvel's Kevin Feige Will Be 'First in Line' for James Gunn's DC Projects

Warner Bros. Discovery appointed writer-director Gunn and producer Peter Safran co-chairs and co-CEOs of DC Studios in October 2022. DC Studios replaces DC Films and brings all DC-related film, TV and animation productions under one banner. Gunn will shepherd DC Studios' creative direction, while Safran will take on the business management and production responsibilities. "We're honored to be the stewards of these DC characters we’ve loved since we were children," Gunn and Safran said in a joint statement issued at the time.

Is the DCEU Era Officially Over?

The pair were barely in post before it became clear that they'd seemingly overseen at least one major change already: the end of the DC Extended Universe label. Not only did Gunn and Safran's statement use the term "DC Universe" instead of the previously established DCEU moniker, but several other senior Warner Bros. representatives followed suit in their own statements, as well. This included Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, and Warner Bros. Pictures co-chairs Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy.

Gunn is yet to publicly comment on the DCEU's official status, however, he has spoken about the hands-on role he intends to play in shaping the shared universe's future. Responding to a fan on Twitter, he recently made it clear that he has no intention of giving up his filmmaking career despite the demands of his new position. Gunn is reportedly slated to write and direct one or more secret DC film projects, with Safran onboard as producer. He is also currently developing the second season of the HBO Max series Peacemaker, which is expected to start filming in 2023.
