DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran have revealed the start of their 10-year plan for the DC Universe, which will be split into two chapters.
Per Screen Rant, Chapter One -- titled Gods & Monsters -- will begin in 2025 with Superman: Legacy, the previously announced young Superman film that Gunn is writing. Additional movies that were announced were The Authority, which Gunn is outlining; The Brave and the Bold, focusing on Batman being a father to an assassin son; Supergirl: World of Tomorrow; and Swamp Thing. The goal is for DC Studios to release two movies and two television shows a year. Gunn and Safran also announced the "architects" of the DCU, creatives that will help guide and develop the DC leaders' 10-year vision. They are comic book writer Tom King (Mister Miracle, Batman), filmmaker Drew Goddard (Cloverfield, The Martian), Moon Knight head writer Jeremy Slater and screenwriter Christina Hodson, who previously scripted Birds of Prey, the canceled Batgirl film and the upcoming The Flash movie.
Superman: Legacy was first announced in December 2022, with Gunn confirmed to be writing the screenplay. So far, the DC Studios co-CEO has revealed that the film will not be an origin story but will begin with Clark Kent already established as Superman and working at the Daily Planet. Henry Cavill will not return as the Man of Steel, with Gunn stating that a younger actor will be cast in the title role once the screenplay has been written. Superman: Legacy will be the first film to release under the new DCU, hitting theaters on July 11, 2025.
Batman Is Getting a Son in the DCU
With Matt Reeves' The Batman Universe staying in its own world, Gunn will introduce a new Caped Crusader to the DCU in The Brave and the Bold. The upcoming film is inspired by writer Grant Morrison and artist Any Kubert's 2006 Batman comic book story arc, "Batman and Son", which follows Bruce Wayne learning that he has fathered a son, Damian, with Talia al Ghul, the daughter of his nemesis, Ra's al Ghul. "This is the introduction of the DCU Batman," stated Gunn. "Of Bruce Wayne and also introduces our favorite Robin, Damian Wayne, who is a little son of a bitch."
Following a critically-acclaimed, yet short-lived television series, Swamp Thing will head to the big screen with a self-titled horror film. Created by writer Len Wein and artist Bernie Wrightson, Swamp Thing first appeared in 1971's House of Secrets #92 (July 1971). The character was originally an idealistic scientist named Alec Holland who was murdered and reborn as the Swamp Thing, a creature made of vegetation that absorbed the scientist's memories, personality and grief. The Swamp Thing can control every iota of plant life in the DC Universe and fights to protect both humanity and the environment—usually from each other.
Gunn's DCU takes flight on July 11, 2025, when Superman: Legacy opens in theaters.
