With Warner Bros. Discovery ringing in the changes, a most surprising element has been James Gunn getting a key role in shaping the DC filmverse. He's done well with The Suicide Squad and the Peacemaker TV series, leaving fans and studio execs alike hopeful he can bring stability.

Thus far, there's an optimistic air with Black Adam doing well at the box office and people excited over Henry Cavill returning as Superman. Interestingly, there's talk of Gunn already eyeing a secret project, which could be tied to the events of Black Adam. This is none other than Justice League Dark, which given Gunn's repertoire, can become DC's version of Guardians of the Galaxy.

Marvel's Guardians franchise allowed Gunn to chart two movies, with a third one out soon, focusing on Star-Lord, Drax, Mantis and Gamora. They world-hopped, with romantic stories at hand and sadistic villains like Ego brought to light. Fans soaked in an action-packed Star Trek-like tale, going from Xandar to Knowhere to so many other places in the galaxy, giving that Multiversal feel, even before the Avengers brought the idea of time travel into the mythos.

But while Justice League Dark isn't cosmic, Gunn can usher the likes of Constantine, Zatanna, Deadman, Jason Blood/Etrigan, Ragman, Swamp Thing and Detective Chimp to unique realms. The setup is already there due to Doctor Fate dying and the Helmet of Nabu looking for a new user after Black Adam, which easily allows Gunn to send a diverse team through the supernatural rigmarole and a gauntlet like what happened with Star-Lord's crew. The Upside Down Man's seedy nightmare realm is one modern example, while Hell is another, not to mention there are other pockets the Dark Multiverse is now introducing that could pose a crisis -- with Gunn's creative vision ideal for the drama.

James Gunn Is Great With Ensembles & Tone

Gunn simply knows how to deal with big casts. His Guardians team was quite extensive, and he juggled them so well, fans are now excited to see Mantis in the Christmas special, as well as Nebula the Grinch. Not to mention, the recent Disney+ shorts with Groot left diehards in awe, all for a creature that doesn't speak much. That's the magic Gunn has when it comes to balancing multiple characters and paving the way for their own stories.

Gunn is also an expert at melding comedy, action and horror, as seen with his writing on Scooby-Doo and the gory Slither that he directed. He even produced Brightburn, which dealt with an evil Superboy, so Gunn is diverse enough to switch up tones and get his cast to match. In the case of Justice League Dark, he can bring more scares and push the envelope like never before, especially as DC is up for R-rated and violent content. This cinematic approach just feels like the better option, with J.J. Abrams' series looking dead in the water after the HBO shuffle. Ultimately, Gunn is a box office draw and is trusted enough to bring a property to life that deserves to be on the big screen as a spectacle that could easily rival what the Guardians did in space.
