The first trailer for Harley Quinn Season 3 reveals James Gunn's DC animated debut.

In the trailer, which you can see below, Gunn appears towards the end, where he sits on a chair made of Clayface while working on an in-universe project centered on Thomas Wayne. The Clayface chair vibrates, and Gunn seems to really be enjoying the experience.

James Gunn Is a Key Figure in Superhero Media

Gunn is a director and writer known for his works on a number of superhero projects for the Marvel Cinematic Universe and DC Extended Universe. In terms of the former, Gunn worked on 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy and its 2017 sequel. He's currently working on a third film in the franchise, which the director has repeatedly said is going to be his last time working on the current iteration of the team. Gunn made his DCEU debut with 2021's The Suicide Squad. He also helmed 2022's Peacemaker, a live-action spinoff series focusing on the project's title character.

In March, Harley Quinn co-creator Patrick Schumacker revealed Gunn's cameo, saying he was playing himself and working on a movie about Thomas Wayne, the father of Bruce Wayne/Batman. It's not clear at this time the wider context for Gunn encountering Harley Quinn and her team.

What We Know About Harley Quinn Season 3

Co-created by Schumacker, Justin Halpern and Dean Lorey, Harley Quinn debuted in 2019 on DC Universe before moving to HBO Max after that original service was radically restructured. The show initially followed Harley Quinn (Kaley Cuoco) as she assembled a team of supervillains, which included Poison Ivy (Lake Bell), King Shark (Ron Funches) and more, in an attempt to prove herself a force to be reckoned with following her breakup with The Joker. Season 2 ended with Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy driving off into the sunset and starting a relationship.

Harley Quinn Season 3 will continue to flesh out Harley and Ivy's relationship. The trailer for the show also teases an encounter with the Court of Owls, one of Batman's deadliest foes, as an orgy. Additionally, the footage teases Joker running for mayor and a plan that Harley believes would "make Lex Luthor shit his pants."

The 10-episode third season of Harley Quinn will release on HBO Max on July 28.
