One obscure Marvel Comics character won't be joining the MCU in James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.Over the weekend, Gunn said a new Marvel character will debut in the holiday special but kept quiet on any further details. He did, however, claim it was "one of the greatest MCU characters of all time." Thanks to the wording, that could mean an all-new character or someone from the comics, but one fan threw out a humorous suggestion: Homer, the Happy Ghost. But Gunn quickly shot that down.RELATED: James Gunn Reveals Guardians of the Galaxy 3 Screen Tests Have Begun

"Homer wasn't Stan Lee's most original idea and, as you can see, far from the only Caspar-inspired comic!" Gunn said, along with sharing other Casper ripoffs. "So, no, I won't be introducing Homer into the MCU."

Created by Stan Lee and long-time Archie Comics artist Dan DeCarlo, Homer debuted in his own series in March 1955 from Atlas Comics, the predecessor to Marvel. As Gunn points out, Homer was a clear attempt at capitalizing on the success of Casper the Friendly Ghost from Harvey Comics. Other copycats came with him, including Timmy the Timid Ghost and Spencer Spook, two of the examples Gunn shared.

The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special will clearly be a playful entry into the MCU, not just because of the franchise it's a part of but given it is clearly homaging the Star Wars Holiday Special. But Homer is a step too far, it seems, not surprising given how obscure the character is -- and the fact that he doesn't exist in the Marvel Universe that the MCU draws from.

The special will, however, feature plenty of surprises. Gunn said the holiday special is required viewing before seeing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which will be the writer-director's final entry in the franchise. It will also feature some actors from The Suicide Squad along with at least one new Marvel character. The special will be around 40 minutes and feature the returning cast, many of whom can next be seen in Thor: Love and Thunder following the conclusion of Avengers: Endgame.

The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special arrives on Disney+ in 2022, while Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 arrives in theaters May 23, 2023.
