During Comic-Con International in San Diego, Marvel unveiled its plans for Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Among the films and Disney+ series, Taika Waititi’s Thor: Love and Thunder was announced, which will bring back Chris Hemsworth as the God of Thunder. However, since Thor was last seen at the end of Avengers: Endgame flying off with the Guardians of the Galaxy, fans started to wonder about the timeline of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Thor 4.

Now, GOTG writer and director James Gunn has officially cleared things up.

On an Instagram post celebrating Avengers: Endgame dethroning Avatar as the biggest film of all time, a fan asked Gunn whether Love and Thunder takes place before or after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. “It takes place before,” Gunn answered, finally settling the timeline of the two films.

At SDCC, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige confirmed the crop of television shows and movies announced made up the entire slate of the MCU’s Phase 4. Therefore, it makes sense that Waititi’s fourth Thor film takes place before Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, given the upcoming Gunn-directed movie will likely be in the Phase 5 slate.
