There was hardly a dry eye anywhere to be found online when Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn revealed Groot's heartbreaking final words in Avengers: Infinity War, which was a simple farewell to his "Dad," Rocket Raccoon. Apparently, though, Gunn wasn't aware of just how many tears would be shed by this revelation, and he's since apologized for pulling so hard at fans' heartstrings with his comments."I knew my answer to the spoiler question last night was touching and sad, but I really did not expect to wake up to so many tweets of people telling me they’re crying," Gunn said in a statement on Twitter. "Sorry for that if you’re at work or whatever. But it means a lot to me you love the characters as much as I do."

Rocket and Groot's relationship has been a profound aspect of the Guardians of the Galaxy films, which quickly led fans to grow attached to the pair's hilarious, yet heartfelt dynamic. However, the added emotional weight of knowing that Groot used his final words to refer to Rocket as "Dad" is certainly a gut-punch, so it's only natural that Gunn revealing this information would be a cause for waterworks.

Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Marvel's Avengers: Infinity War stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson, Anthony Mackie, Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Olsen, Tom Holland, Benedict Cumberbatch, Chadwick Boseman, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Tom Hiddleston, and Josh Brolin.
