Actor James Franco probably already feels pretty great and powerful right now, considering his Academy Award nomination for the critically acclaimed film 127 Hours. But if things work out, he should be feeling it even more when he headlines the upcoming Disney prequel-esque film Oz, the Great and Powerful.
The Hollywood Reporter reveals the actor is in early talks to star in the upcoming film directed by Sam Raimi, who Franco previously collaborated with on the Spider-Man films for Sony. The news comes pretty soon after word of Johnny Depp passing on the role Thursday night. The part originally belonged to Robert Downey Jr.; however, the actor fell out of production two and a half weeks ago. With new contenders coming up the ranks this quickly, it definitely appears as though the Great and Powerful is a huge priority for Disney, despite no current start or release date.
Taking place before Dorothy Gale’s trip down the Yellow Brick Road and through the Emerald City, the movie centers on the Oz’s eponymous wizard and how he escaped from the real world to his new, munchkin-filled home.
