Author James Ellroy and New Regency are seeking a home for a television sequel to the acclaimed 1997 neo-noir thriller L.A. Confidential.
Deadline reports that Ellroy, who penned the 1990 novel on which the film was based, wrote the project on spec as a TV drama, which is being shopped to broadcast and cable networks as well as “emerging distribution platforms” (which probably means Netflix, Amazon Studios and the like). Unsurprisingly, the website contends there’s already interest, with homes for a straight-to-series commitment.
Directed and co-written by Curtis Hanson, L.A. Confidential starred Kevin Spacey, Russell Crowe, Guy Pearce and Kim Bassinger in a story of police corruption, Hollywood celebrity and tabloid scandal in early-1950s Los Angeles. The TV series is expected to continue those themes; whether it would feature some of the same characters isn’t stated.
