Avatar: The Way of Water director James Cameron just shared some major new details about the third installment of the beloved Avatar franchise, involving a new Na'vi tribe and fire.
In an interview with the French outlet 20 Minutes, as reported by The Direct, Cameron explained that Avatar 3 will introduce a whole new group of Na'vi: the Ash people. He said, "I want to reveal the Nav'is from another angle because, for the moment, I have only shown their good sides... In the early films, there are very negative human examples and very positive Navi's examples. In Avatar 3, we'll do the reverse. We will also explore new universes while continuing the story of the main characters." The director gave fans even more of a reason to be excited about upcoming Avatar films, teasing "the last parts will be the best," and that "The others were an introduction, a way to set the table before serving the meal. But, obviously, everything will depend on how Avatar 2 will be received, if it will find its audience."
Cameron previously said that the Avatar franchise will only continue if the second and third installments make money. He revealed the "scripts are already written" and "everything's designed" in case The Way of Water is a box office hit.
Avatar: The Way of Water Is a Success
Thus far, the Avatar sequel appears to be a hit. At the time of writing, the film has grossed $382.6 million at the domestic box office. While The Way of Water is still trailing Maverick domestically, some predict that it will overtake the Tom Cruise-led action sequel internationally. The Avatar sequel recently soared past $1.1 billion worldwide, while Maverick, which was released in May, is currently at $1.5 billion.
But The Way of Water isn't doing well everywhere overseas. The film earned much less than expected at the Chinese box office, bringing in the equivalent of $100 million after 2 weeks in theaters, against the originally predicted $357 million. This is largely due to the rapidly spreading COVID-19 outbreak in the country, which has severely impacted cinema and other events centered on social gatherings.
