James Wan's Aquaman can be counted as a success by multiple metrics. The film is the highest-grossing DC movie of all time, netting more than $1 billion at the global box office. It succeeded in changing public perception of its often joked about superhero and spawned a sequel and a spinoff film. Now, Wan can add the approval of a notorious critic of comic book movies and the director of the fake Aquaman film from HBO's Entourage, James Cameron.

In an interview with Yahoo Entertainment, Cameron was asked what his thoughts were on Wan's Aquaman film, noting that his version of the film would have been very different.

"I think it's great fun," said Cameron. "I never could have made that film, because it requires this kind of total dreamlike disconnection from any sense of physics or reality. People just kind of zoom around underwater, because they propel themselves mentally, I guess, I don’t know. But it’s cool! You buy it on its own terms."

Cameron's skepticism of the underwater mobility of the Atlanteans in Aquaman comes from the thousands of hours the filmmaker has spent underwater researching and filming the likes of The Abyss and Titanic, as well as the multiple deep solo dives he's undertaken in the Deepsea Challenger submersible, becoming the first to ever complete the trek to the deepest part of the Mariana's Trench solo.

"I've spent thousands of hours underwater," said Cameron. "While I can enjoy that film, I don't resonate with it because it doesn't look real."

Cameron also noted that environmental activism would have featured more heavily in his version of the film, though he did commend Wan for bringing some awareness to the way Earth's oceans are being negatively impacted.

"They did throw in a couple of things with whales and things like that to remind us that we are kind of using the ocean as a toilet and as a garbage dump," he said. "So I applaud the film for that."

Of the fake version he directed on Entourage, Cameron had this to say, "I thought I did a pretty good job on that. I thought I stuck the landing on that film."
