A female James Bond? Don't hold your breath. 007 producer Barbara Broccoli reaffirms that the character of Bond is a male character, and that a gender switch isn't something the franchise is interested in. However, she doesn't rule out female director one day helming a Bond film.

In a new interview with the Guardian, Broccoli ruled out the possibility of a gender swapped Bond. Despite initially teasing "anything was possible" earlier this year, Broccoli now seems to believe Bond works best as a male character. "He’s a male character," she said. "He was written as a male and I think he’ll probably stay as a male."

The producer's latest comments go against her earlier remarks from the beginning of the year, when Broccoli was asked whether or not it was possible we could one day see a black or female Bond. To that, Broccoli responded coyly. "These films tend to reflect the times so we always try to push the envelope a little bit," she said. “Anything is possible."

While the producer's latest comments all but rule out a female actor in the leading role, Broccoli is all for hiring female talent behind the camera. When asked whether she'd be interested in either hiring a female screenwriter and/or director, the producer seemed to be entirely on board with the prospect. "Yes, absolutely," answered Broccoli. "As a female producer, of course I’d like to do that."

Still, don't expect to see a female director behind the camera for some time. It was recently confirmed that director Cary Fukunaga (Maniac, True Detective) will direct Bond 25 for MGM following the departure of director Danny Boyle, who left the project over creative differences. Production on the next Bond film is slated to begin in early next year for a February 14, 2020 release.
