Jake Gyllenhaal will join Ryan Reynolds and Rebecca Ferguson in "Life," the sci-fi thriller from "Deadpool" screenwriters Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gyllenhaal will step into the starring role originally intended for Reynolds, who faces a scheduling conflict with his newest project, "Hitman's Bodyguard." Reynolds will instead take a supporting role, although the film's cast is described as ensemble in nature.

Directed by Daniel Espinosa ("Safe House"), the Skydance film follows the crew of the International Space Station who discover a lifeform on Mars that turns out not only to be intelligent but dangerous.
