Jack The Giant Killer Writer To Adapt Beasts Of Burden

Jack the Giant Killer writer Darren Lemke has been hired to pen the CG-animated adaptation of Beasts of Burden, Heat Vision reports.

The Eisner Award-winning supernatural mystery by Evan Dorkin and Jill Thompson, optioned earlier this month by producer Andrew Adamson, centers on a group of dogs, and one cat, that investigates strange occurrences and protects the seemingly idyllic community of Burden Hill. The characters debuted in 2003 in a series of short stories in Dark Horse's horror anthology before graduating to their own miniseries in 2009.

The movie will be created by Reel FX, the company that animated Open Season 3 and the Tales of the Black Freighter short. Adamson (Shrek Forever After, Puss in Boots) will produce with his Strange Weather Films partner Aron Warner and Dark Horse's Mike Richardson. Dark Horse's Keith Goldberg is executive producing.

Lemke worked with Adamson and Warner on Shrek Forever After, but also has a history with Goldberg who, while an executive at New Line, bought Lemke's script for Jack the Giant Killer. The modern fairy tale is now in production with Bryan Singer directing, and Nicholas Hoult in the title role.
