Jack Ryan Prequel Kicks Off Trilogy, Recruits Knightley

After much deliberation, writing and speculation, Paramount Pictures has officially announced its plans for Jack Ryan, the next film in the franchise based on Tom Clancy’s CIA analyst hero. Deadline reports that the film will focus on Ryan’s pre-CIA days, kick off a trilogy, co-star Keira Knightley as his love interest and come out toward the end of 2013.

Jack Ryan first made his way to the big screen in 1990’s The Hunt For Red October, which starred Alec Baldwin; the role then moved to Harrison Ford for Patriot Games (1992) and Clear and Present Danger (1994). The last time Ryan appeared onscreen was with Ben Affleck in 2002’s Sum of All Fears. Since then Paramount has taken its time to get the script just right, going through plenty of screenwriters before David Koepp (Premium Rush, Jurassic Park) took a pass. The film was also delayed a bit when original director Jack Bender stepped aside and Kenneth Branagh replaced him. Branagh will pull double duty by playing a Russian villain as well.

Kevin Costner will also appear as William Harper, an idealist who trains Ryan as well as another character named John Kelly, who will star in his own movie Without Remorse featuring Tom Hardy. Paramount is doing its best to build a solid franchise not just around one character, but several, taking a page from the Marvel Studios playbook.
