J. Michael Straczynski will write Red Mars, the Spike TV drama based on Kim Stanley Robinson's bestselling Mars trilogy, Deadline reports.

Announced in September, the series tells the story of man’s attempt to colonize and terraform the red planet. Named for the first novel, Red Mars is said to focus on the question at the heart of Robinson's trilogy: What's it mean to be human when we're no longer of Earth?

Vince Gerardis of HBO's Game of Thrones is executive producing, with Robinson serving as consultant.

Creator of the fan-favorite space opera Babylon 5, Straczynski most recently collaborated with filmmakers Andy and Lana Wachowski on Sense8, the upcoming Netflix drama about eight strangers from different parts of the world who suddenly become mentally and emotionally linked.
