J. Michael Straczynski Planning ‘Babylon 5’ Feature Film

With the recent success of Guardians of the Galaxy, expect a large number of sci-fi properties new and known to get the nod from Hollywood.

However, J. Michael Straczynski may have a jump on the competition, as TVWise reports he announced at Comic-Con International that he plans to write big-screen reboot of Babylon 5, with an eye toward starting production in 2016.

The cult-favorite space opera, which took its name from a five-mile-long space that houses five alien races, aired for four seasons on The WB and for one on TNT.

Straczynski said he’d like to see original cast members return for the film. “I’d love to see Bruce [Boxleitner] as the President of the Earth Alliance,” he said.

Straczynski has attempted to make B5 films several times, but none has gotten off the ground. If Warner Bros., which produced the TV series, doesn’t want to move forward with the reboot script, the writer-director will be able to shift production under his own Studio JMS, which is also working on the Netflix series Sense8 with the Wachowskis.
