As a special Star Wars Day surprise, J.J. Abrams joined Tony-nominated writer-performer Lin-Manuel Miranda (“Hamilton”) in front of New York City’s Richard Rodgers Theatre to perform a live rendition of the song Miranda wrote for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”
The song, described by Miranda as an “intergalactic Shaggy cover” — reminiscent of “It Wasn’t Me” — was played during the Cantina scene on Takodana in “The Force Awakens.” Abrams enlisted Miranda to write the song when he saw a performance of “Hamilton” last year, where, during the intermission, Miranda jokingly offered to write a new Cantina song for Abrams.
