A new It prequel series, Welcome to Derry (working title), has officially been ordered at HBO Max.

The new show from Warner Bros. Television will be developed by It and It Chapter Two director Andy Muschietti, his longtime filmmaking partner Barbara Muschietti, and It Chapter Two co-producer Jason Fuchs. Director Muschietti is also set to helm several episodes of the series. Welcome to Derry will be set in the same universe as the feature film adaptations, based on Stephen King’s original 1986 novel.

Everyone's Excited for More Pennywise

Siblings Andy and Barbara Muschietti commented on the news, touching on their personal connection to the source material. "As teenagers, we took turns reading chapters of Stephen King’s It until the thick paperback fell to pieces," they said. "It is an epic story that contains multitudes, far beyond what we could explore in our It movies. We can’t wait to share the depths of Steve's novel, in all its heart, humor, humanity and horror." Co-showrunner Fuchs said it's "an opportunity of a lifetime" for him to work on the show. "[I]t's a dream come true -- or, maybe more appropriately, a nightmare."

King also shared his enthusiasm about the upcoming project, expressing excitement that the story of "Maine’s most haunted city" has the chance to live on. "I’m glad Andy Muschietti is going to be overseeing the frightening festivities, along with a brain trust including his talented sister, Barbara," King said. "Red balloons all around!"

Two more King adaptations are also imminent: a Children of the Corn reboot film, streaming on Shudder beginning March 21, and the first feature-length adaptation of The Boogeyman, opening in theaters on June 2.

It, the first of a two-part adaptation of King’s novel of the same name, was released in 2017 and covered the first half of the book. The acclaimed film follows The Losers' Club, a group of kids who are haunted by a supernatural being (Bill Skarsgård) that emerges from the sewer. 2019's It Chapter Two reunites members of the Losers’ Club as adults, featuring a cast of A-listers such as Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy and Bill Hader.

The Muschiettis' next outing is DC Studios' The Flash, the long-awaited solo film for Ezra Miller's Scarlet Speedster. Despite the film's tumultuous post-production period due to Miller's various behavioral issues, The Flash tested exceptionally well with early audiences. DC Studios co-head James Gunn even called the film "probably one of the greatest superhero movies ever made." The Flash speeds into theaters on June 16.
