As a genre, the well of isekai anime has reached a point of depletion. There's been such an influx of shows to the genre that it's hard to find anything new or unique; too many of them feel so paint by the numbers. It's rather disappointing that the reverse isekai sub-genre doesn't get nearly as much love as its counterpart.

Some of that may be due to a fantasy format lending itself more towards action and a reverse isekai being better for a slice of life drama. That hasn't stopped great shows like Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid from existing, though. There are more than a few popular isekai shows that would be interesting to see in a reverse format via a sequel, if for nothing else than to see beloved characters in a new setting.

10 Having The NPCs Of Overlord Cross Into Our World Would Be Immensely Entertaining

Albedo Overlord

Having the NPCs of Overlord transfer over to the real world would open a lot of different stories and could lead a sequel in several different directions. With how evil many of the characters are, it'd be amusing to see how characters like Albedo, Shalltear, and Demiurge adjusted to life on earth. Would they settle in, or would Demiurge try to manipulate his way into a seat of power somehow? Unlike Isekai Quartet, the show would likely be a fair bit more serious.

9 Raphtalia Should Travel Back With Naofumi After The Waves Are Defeated

Raphtalia with the sun rising behind her in The Rising of the Shield Hero

The stand-out character of Rising of the Shield Hero is easily Raphtalia. As interesting as Naofumi is as a cynical hero, Raphtalia is the heart and soul of the show. She was voted the Best Girl in the Crunchyroll Awards of 2020 for a reason.

If there were ever a sequel to the series, it should be centered on Raphtalia joining Naofumi back in the real world since she obviously has feelings for him. There she could transverse a new landscape, dealing with issues like fitting in as the only one of her kind.

8 My Next Life As A Villainess Would Be Just As Fun If The Roles Were Reversed

My Next Life as a Villainess Katerina

My Next Life as a Villainess is a wholesome and fun show that has harems galore but doesn't focus on the romance side of things at all. It's also a rare isekai plot that feels like it's never been touched on before.

That unique plot could work just as well in reverse as it did as a typical isekai. What would happen if the actual villainess of the game swapped places with the otaku who loved the game? Would they humorously try to take over the school they went to? It'd make for a good comedy anime.

7 Death March to the Parallel World Rhapsody Should Have Suzuki Wake Up With All Of His Game Characters Slowly Showing Up In The Real World

An image from Death March to the Parallel World Rhapsody.

It was one thing when Suzuki woke up transported into one of his video games. That's a standard isekai formula and caused Death March to the Parallel World Rhapsody to blend in with the plethora of other titles available. If the reverse happened, though, it'd have a far better hook. Suzuki trying to get the fantasy girls to adjust to a real-world setting would be amusing, and while it'd be lacking in the action department, it would make for a fun harem comedy.

6 Demon Lord, Retry!'s Concept Didn't Get Expanded On As Well As It Could Have And Deserves A Second Chance

Demon-Lord-Retry

Demon Lord, Retry! introduces some interesting story beats, such as the mystery of who Aku is, but never manages to fully capitalize on these beats as well as it could have. Reversing the roles with Aku awakening in the real world rather than Akira waking in the Infinity Game would help continue the father-daughter dynamic the two have together and could tell a story where they have to stop Hakuto Kunai from escaping into this world as well.

5 Princess Connect! Re:Dive Would Be More Enjoyable If The Silent Protagonist Didn't Exist

main group from princess connect re dive

Princess Connect! Re: Dive is a rare isekai where the protagonist is entirely disposable. Since the anime is based on a gacha game, he's the avatar of the player. That makes sense in a way but makes him a complete waste of space.

It'd be better if the three girls were in a reverse isekai instead. They'd get the same ample amount of screentime they do in the original show and not have to deal with a mute cardboard cut-out following them around. The added foreignness of the setting would make it even easier for the premise of cute girls doing cute things to take off.

4 Outbreak Company Feels Like It'd Make More Sense As A Reverse Isekai

OutBreak Company

Outbreak Company is an isekai with a very strange plot that centers around an otaku getting transported into another world and teaching the inhabitants about the finer points of being an otaku. It's an odd plot that's mainly used for lewd jokes in what's a rather raunchy comedy series. It's also one that feels like it'd make far more sense as a reverse isekai instead. Kano and his parents teaching fantasy characters the finer points of light novels rather than integrating them into the world sounds silly enough to work.

3 Azusa Returning To Her Former Life While Retaining Her Powers As An Immortal Witch Would Allow For Lots Of Character Development

Azusa kills a slime from I've Been Killing Slimes

Unlike most isekai mentioned, Azusa from I've Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years and Maxed Out My Level would be interesting in a reverse isekai all by herself. One thing the genre never addresses is how those who got isekai'd would react to be getting brought back to the real world. Do they adjust well or yearn to go back?

Azusa would be the perfect person to explore that with, as she'd be forced to confront her old job as an office worker after being free of it for so long.

2 How A Realist Hero Rebuilt The Kingdom Could Show Soma Doing The Same To A Real World Government Racked In Debt

Souma from How A Realist Hero Rebuilt The Kingdom thinkng

The plotline of How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom could easily be transferred over to a more real-life scenario, especially since it focuses more on the political side of things rather than combat. Both Soma and Liscia could return to his home only to find the nation in a state of ruin due to debt or war. It'd then be up to them to figure out how to rebuild the nation into what it once was. Overall, it'd be much of the same with a more modern twist.

1 Inuyasha & Company Trying To Conform To Human Customs Would Cut Into The Action, But Ramp Up The Humor

Inuyasha

While Inuyasha already got its sequel with Yashahime, it would have been interesting to see Inuyasha and the rest of the gang trying to conform to the human customs of Kagome's world.

While Sango and Miroku would have been fine, Inuyasha would have struggled mightily, and given his temper, the show would have needed to be more of a comedy than its action-oriented predecessor. Still, it would have been a nice character moment to see them go to Kagome rather than always having her come to them.
