Survival in the Dark Continent is rare, but impressively, Netero returned alive and unsatisfied by the lack of challenges he desired to face to build his strength.

After seeing the dangers that lie within the Dark Continent, Netero realized that he had twice ventured to a place that would mean certain death for others. He knew his power and Nen abilities were head and shoulders above nearly everyone else, including his son Beyond Netero, who he kept a secret.

Upon hearing that Beyond traveled to the Dark Continent, Netero demanded that his son never return there, and he convinced V5, a group of world leaders, to deem the area as a forbidden land, a place that all were restricted from traveling to.

8 He Was The Undefeated Grandmaster At His Dojo

At the age of 46, Netero traveled into the mountains and dedicated his daily life to training in martial arts. He mastered his training in two years and set off to return to the dojo located at the bottom of the mountain where he initiated his training. He showcased his new abilities to the public and received recognition and praise from the grandmaster of the dojo.

Each member was unique in their ability and had a specific purpose for being a part of the group. The diversity within the Zodiacs made it easy for Netero to utilize them as the chairman's counselors. Among them was his Vice-Chairman, Pariston Hill, and Gon Freecss' father, Ging Freecss.

During the 287th Hunter Exam, word about the Hunter Exam examiner, Menchi's abuse of power got back to Netero. He took it upon himself to visit the location of the Second Phase of the exam and reprimand Menchi's bad habit of asking the examinees to complete impossible tasks.

Netero made sure the exam was being conducted fairly and ordered Menchi to come up with a new test that would still challenge the examinees but remain doable. He also ordered that she participate in the test herself as a way to humble her.

As the Fourth Phase of the Hunter Exam approached, Netero discussed his plan to orchestrate an unconventional series of fights that the remaining nine applicants would engage in.

After interviewing each applicant individually, Netero created a bracket for the fight and his fellow committee members were bewildered by his choice in the match-ups for the Final Phase. He reassured them he was serious in his choice to match up the opponents in such a peculiar way, and this highlighted the faith he had in the younger, less intimidating applicants, like Gon.

Aboard the airship which transported the Hunter Exam examinees from the Second Phase location to the Third Phase location, Netero observed Gon and his friend, Killua Zoldyck, and took notice of their potential.

Shortly after introducing himself as the Chairman of the Hunter Exam Selection Committee, Netero invited Gon and Killua to participate in a game, one in which they would immediately be awarded a Hunter License upon winning. The object of the game was to take the ball from Netero's hands, but knowing he was immensely faster and more agile than both the boys, Netero used the game as a way to observe their abilities and strengthen them.

3 He Didn't Hesitate To Reward Those With Outstanding Ability & Dedication

It came as no surprise to viewers when Killua entered the 288th Hunter Exam as an unrivaled applicant. During the First Phase of the exam, the examiner structured the test in a way that he thought would eliminate half of the examinees. The objective of the initial phase was to collect at least five examinee number plates and present them to him to proceed to the next phase.

It took Killua a mere 30 minutes to not only collect the five plates necessary to pass but also every single other competitor's plate. Netero was informed of this, and he wasted no time exempting Killua from the remainder of the exam and awarding him with the only Hunter License that was gifted that year.

2 He Resigned From His Position As Chairman With Grace, Respect, & Consideration

After receiving orders from the V5 to exterminate the Chimera Ants that posed a threat to all of humanity, Netero readied himself for the battle that was to come. Despite the dangerous mission he was preparing to take head-on, Netero valued the future of the Hunter Association and regarded his position as Chairman with great importance.

After coming to terms with his inevitable fate, he ensured that the Hunter Associate would continue to grow and prosper without him. Before setting off to face Meruem, the Chimera Ant King, Netero officially stepped down from his position and recorded a DVD with specific details on how to carry out the next Chairman Election.

1 He Sacrificed His Life To Save Humanity

Upon reaching Meruem for the final showdown, Netero suggested they battle in a remote location of the NGL to avoid casualties, to which Meruem complied. Once they reached the military weapons site, Meruem attempted to convince Netero to step down from the fight. Despite his uncertainty, Netero came to terms that his death meant the survival of the Hunter Association, and he struck the first hit.

The two exchange blows, and Netero takes the time to appreciate the opportunity he was given to battle an unstoppable adversary. Netero then unleashed his final attack, Zero Hands, before detonating the Rose bomb in his heart, which later caused Meruem and his underling to die from the lethal poison that was released. The Hunter Association recognized Netero as a martyr that saved the world.
