What Is Violet Evergarden About?

The Netflix anime series and ensuing movies adapted the four-part Violet Evergarden series of light novels by Kana Akatsuki and Akiko Takase. The world of the series involves Auto Memory Dolls -- people who assist others in the act of writing and communicating their emotions. One of these is the eponymous Violet Evergarden, a young woman who has previously experienced traumatic hardship and a less than peaceful life.

Trying to find her way in the world is something that she soon realizes she may not be ready for, as despite her role, she finds emotions to be incredibly confusing and difficult to understand. This is one of the several reasons why fans think she may be a cyborg, android or some other type of robotic artificial person. This social awkwardness concerning emotions and relationships is compounded not only with her incredible fighting valor but also Violet having robotic arms. Despite this evidence, Violet is a lot more human than she seems.

Is Violet Evergarden a Human or a Cyborg?

Violet Evergarden Braiding Her Hair

Violet Evergarden is not a cyborg, android or robot; she is a (mostly) flesh and blood human being. Her awkwardness around normal people and their emotions stems from the fact that she was raised from childhood to be primed for war. This status as a soldier stunted her development in regard to normal society, making her actions seem incredibly robotic to the average Joe. Likewise, a grievous injury in battle led to her losing her arms, which is why she has artificial prosthetic replacements. These mechanical appendages and her battle prowess also explain why she's so sturdy in a fight, achieving feats that untrained civilians would be unable to.

Although her robotic arms could theoretically make her a cyborg, this still wouldn't be an accurate description of Violet, since this is the only part of her that's non-organic. On the other hand, her incredible physical strength seems to stem from something beyond just her arms and training, suggesting that there's something almost superhuman about her. Of course, Violet being primed more for battle than human emotion makes her job difficult, and it all stems from the saddening events of her past. Those who want to see Violet cope with her trauma and learn to truly be human should definitely check out the anime series on Netflix.
