Is The Dark Tower HBO-Bound?

It’s been a rough road for The Dark Tower, Ron Howard’s overly ambitious, and overly expensive, transmedia adaptation of Stephen King’s fantasy epic. Planned as a movie trilogy and two interlocking television miniseries, the sweeping project was destined for NBC Universal until it was delayed by “budgetary complications” and then abandoned by the studio entirely in July.

But Howard and his Imagine Entertainment partner Brian Grazer soldiered on, pursuing outside financing and mentioning Netflix as a potential alternative to network TV for the miniseries.

Now, however, Grazer contends that a leaner Dark Tower will move ahead — they’ve trimmed $45 million from the first film — with the miniseries landing at HBO. “We’re going to do [The Dark Tower] with HBO,” he tells MTV. “We’ll do the TV with HBO, and we’ll do the movie with … to be determined. We’ll do it right.”

Grazer also believes that Javier Bardem, long wanted for the lead role of Roland Deschain, will still be involved.

There’s no word yet from HBO, or any indication of when The Dark Tower might go into production.
