Is One Of These Five Actresses The Next Lois Lane?

Following Sunday’s announcement that The Tudors actor Henry Cavill landed the lead in Warner Bros.’ Superman movie, speculation has turned to who will play Lois Lane in director Zack Snyder’s franchise reboot.

Australian entertainment website What’s Playing contends that Cavill edged out his closest competitors, who included Watchmen‘s Matthew Goode and True Blood‘s Joe Manganiello, in no small part because he’s available during the production window. The same requirement of immediate availability — filming is expected to begin in June — will presumably apply to Superman’s love interest, a role last played on the big screen by Kate Bosworth.

However, the site says there are already five young actresses who have read for the role, or have been asked to read. Considering that Warner Bros. and producer Christopher Nolan began auditioning actors to play Superman in November and December, it’s more than likely they’ve met with contenders for the role of Lois. But whether the women What’s Playing names were among them is anyone’s guess. To my mind, two of the actresses seem about right for the job, while two are so ill-suited that it makes me question either the website’s sources or the studio’s judgment. The fifth is … I don’t know. Take a look for yourselves:

Dianna Agron: A rumored candidate to play Gwen Stacy in Sony’s Spider-Man reboot — the role of course went to Emma Stone — the Glee actress appears this month opposite Alex Pettyfer in I Am Number Four. At 24 years old, and portraying a teenager in Fox’s hit series, Agron is probably too young to play the Daily Planet’s star reporter.

Malin Åkerman: The model turned actress played Silk Spectre II in Snyder’s adaptation of Watchmen, but at 32 — four years older than Cavill — What’s Playing asserts there’s “zero chance” of her being Lois. However, Åkerman doesn’t look older than Cavill, so I don’t see why her age would be an issue.

Jessica Biel: The website describes The A-Team and Blade Trinity actress as “one of the leading contenders” for the part, which just baffles me. Biel may be attractive, but I’ve seen cardboard cutouts with more presence.

Rachel McAdams: As Irene Adler in 2009’s Sherlock Holmes, the 32-year-old actress was essentially a Victorian Lois Lane (but with a criminal bent) — headstrong, quick-witted and captivating. What’s more, McAdams was reportedly on the shortlist for The Dark Knight Rises, which means she’s already on Nolan’s radar.

Kristen Stewart: The only actress on the list who makes Biel seem charismatic in comparison, the 20-year-old Twilight star is certainly in high demand. But, wow, would she ever be wrong for this part.

Snyder’s Superman reboot, thought to be called Man of Steel, is written by David S. Goyer from a story by Goyer and producer Christopher Nolan. Charles Rovan, Emma Thomas and Deborah Snyder also are producing. Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are executive producers. It’s set for a December 2012 release.
