Disney's recent purchase of land near Disneyland has ignited rumors the entertainment giant plans to expand the Anaheim, California, resort to make room for its blockbuster "Star Wars" and Marvel properties.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Disney bought three connected parcels totaling 14.7 acres, located just across the street from Disney California Adventure, but it isn't tipping its hand. A park spokeswoman would only say "this property will help to support additional infrastructure needs."

But Todd Regan, founder of the Disney news site MiceChat.com, told the newspaper Marvel and "Star Wars" are the obvious explanations.

"It's really a no-brainer that 'Star Wars' will take over at Disneyland and Marvel will probably go into Disney California Adventure," he said.

Disney acquired Marvel in 2009 and Lucasfilm in 2012 for about $4 billion each, and since then has teased plans to integrate the superheroes and "Star Wars" characters into its theme parks. However, the company's hands have been tied somewhat by a preexisting agreement giving Universal Studios' Islands of Adventure exclusive rights to Marvel characters in Florida

With Disney World seemingly out of the equation, Disney has introduced smaller-scale Marvel attractions, such as "Iron Man Tech Presented by Stark Industries," at Disneyland, and even overhauled the flagship of the Disney Cruise Line to include an Avengers Academy for kids. Hong Kong Disneyland is also expected to get its own Marvel superheroes area.

As for "Star Wars," Disney CEO Bob Iger promised only a year ago that the blockbuster movie franchise would become the company's answer to Universal's "Harry Potter" attraction.
