Riri Williams, aka Ironheart, is coming to Disney+. Created by Brian Michael Bendis and Mike Deodato, Riri first appeared in 2016's Invincible Iron Man, before going on to become a staple of the Champions and a powerful hero in her own right.

Riri Williams started life as the next Iron Man, crafting her own suit, before adapting her own unique identity as Ironheart. She's joining the MCU alongside a wealth of other young heroes, which means big things for the future of the franchise.

How Did Riri Williams Become Ironheart?

Riri Williams became Ironheart through her own talent and skills. Being introverted and isolated, she devoted her time to engineering equipment that she believed could be used to aid superheroes in their day-to-day actions. When she was 13 -- and already admitted into M.I.T. -- she lost her stepfather and best friend to a drive-by shooting.

In order to escape her pain, Riri developed a modified version of an outdated Iron Man armor. In order to build it, she stole equipment from campus. When caught, she used the armor to escape. This event forced her to learn how to operate the armor very quickly, which she used to fight crime. However, rather than feel satisfied, she continued obsessing over improving her design.

Her antics drew the attention of Tony Stark, who was impressed by Riri's resourcefulness and engineering prowess at such a young age. Tony decided to help fund and mentor Riri. She didn't choose to adopt the name Ironheart until after the events of Civil War II, when Tony fell into a coma after a fight with Captain Marvel. Riri decided to pick up the mantle from Tony, taking on a new moniker: Ironheart.

As Ironheart, she gained tons of endorsements and support from those around her. Riri ultimately defeated the Latverian terrorist Lucia von Bardas, who at that point had control over Doctor Doom's former territory. She temporarily declared herself in charge of Latveria long enough to negotiate peace with S.H.I.E.L.D. and organize fair elections in her wake.

Ironheart Joins the Champions

The Champions celebrating Spider-Man's birthday

The Champions are a group of younger superheroes, disenchanted by the behavior of their older peers. The original group consists of Miles Morales, Kamala Khan and Sam Alexander, aka Spider-Man, Ms. Marvel and Nova. They recruit Amadeus Cho, aka the new Hulk, Viv Vision and Nadia van Dyne, aka the Unstoppable Wasp.

Ironheart joined the team officially during the Secret Empire event, when Captain America seemingly joined Hydra and took over the planet. She helped the Champions resist Captain America, even helping Miles go into a position where he could kill the evil version of Steve Rogers.

From there, Ironheart joined the Champions, helping them on a myriad of missions and adventures, even confronting a degree of sexual identity confusion when caught up in an awkward fling with Viv. Riri Williams has come a long way from the socially isolated teen, building armor to cope with her immense loneliness. She has become an integral member to a new team of heroes.

With Miles Morales teased in Spider-Man: Homecoming and Kamala Khan appearing in both Ms. Marvel and Captain Marvel 2, it seems like the Champions have already begun to materialize. This, alongside the emergence of several key members of the Young Avengers, indicates the future MCU might feature the youth of the superhero world taking over.
