Iron Man Writers Recruited To Reboot Tomb Raider Franchise

Iron Man screenwriters Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby have been hired to pen a new Tomb Raider movie that will reboot the blockbuster action-adventure franchise.

According to Heat Vision, the writers say they hope to create an “origin story for Lara Croft that solidifies her place alongside Ellen Ripley and Sarah Connor in the pantheon of great female action heroes.”

The film rights to the classic video-game property were acquired in March by producer Graham King’s GK Films, which is shooting for a 2013 release. King will produce with Tim Headington.

The archaeologist-adventurer was famously portrayed by Angelina Jolie in two Paramount Pictures adaptations, 2001’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and 2003’s Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, which grossed a combined $432 million worldwide.

Fergus and Otsby earned an Academy Award nomination for best adapted screenplay for 2006’s Children of Men, and are among several writers on this summer’s Cowboys & Aliens. They also worked on upcoming adaptations of Maximum Ride and Akira.
