WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Iron Man #1 by Christopher Cantwell, CAFU, Frank D'Armata and VC's Joe Caramagna, on sale now.

Iron Man is back in a new series, and he is attempting to reboot his life. After years of getting more and more high tech, Tony Stark wants to go back to the basics.

Stark has downgraded to regular armor, which Patsy Walker refers to as "vintage." After accepting a buyout of his company, he also downgraded his living to a brownstone and bought a vintage car -- a 1978 Dodge Aspen. However, with the return to basics, Stark seems to be struggling with his new lifestyle.

Walker herself asked if this was a mid-life crisis, and when Stark took to the streets for some illegal street racing on Amsterdam Avenue, he realized he wasn't as good as he thought. He showed up and convinced the street racing team he wasn't a cop by offering up $5,000 for a race, calling himself "a dumb rich guy with five grand to lose." By the end, he did indeed lose the money. The guy running the races gave him a shot to go up against a kid named Halcyon.

Tony met Halcyon, who is deaf, and was told via sign language to "get ready to see taillights." The two then had a tough race, which included a little physical impact between the cars, and then Halcyon left Stark in his dust. The race was closer than expected, but it had Stark sweating and stressed by the end. Halcyon smiled and left with Stark's money and a small wave. As Stark points out, this kid was "ice cold."

This might be the theme of this entire new Iron Man series. No matter what Tony does in this issue, he never seems to come out on top. He saves the planet from Terrax the Tamer, a former herald of Galactus, and the only thing he heard were complaints that he broke a television satellite by doing so. Stark gave up control of his company, and people insulted him because of the buyout he received. He bought a Brownstone, and people dismissed that decision. When he lost his race, people found out about it and posted "nice burnout" on social media. His girlfriend, Janet Van Dyne, even dumped him.

When he finally found a "friendly face" in Patsy Walker, she put him in his place. Stark told her that he built a suit and chose to help people. He then built a company and developed a reputation, and his problem now is that everyone thinks they know who he is except for him. As Patsy tells him, this is the same ego Tony always had, but in the different clothes of humility. Stark never responded as he changed the subject when he saw the helicopter on the library that led to a battle with Hellcat against Unicorn.

Tony Stark tried to prove something to himself with a contest in illegal street racing. He ended up losing, and it was his opponent, a man with no superpowers, who was unfazed by the competition. This is a very different Iron Man, and the defeat in his race shows this is also going to be a series where he has to find his confidence again. Stark can't beat a kid on the streets in a race, and he can't win with the public. What will it take to make Iron Man the hero he once was again?
