Avengers: Endgame almost included the Marvel Cinematic Universe's first F-bomb.
Speaking to Empire, writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely revealed Iron Man almost had a much naughtier sendoff: "I think there was f*ck you at one point. Didn't he say f*ck off? He may have said it…you do a lot of takes. Like can we really end all this on a complete swear? On a kiss my ass Thanos."
Ultimately, the film went with "I am Iron Man" as Tony Stark's last line at the suggestion of editor Jeff Ford. This brought the character full circle, echoing his shocking revelation at the end of 2008's Iron Man. In Endgame, Stark delivers this line just before snapping the Gauntlet, and the aftermath leaves him unable to speak.
Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Avengers: Endgame stars Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Brie Larson as Captain Marvel, Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, Don Cheadle as War Machine, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Danai Gurira as Okoye and Bradley Cooper as Rocket, with Gwyneth Paltrow Pepper Potts, Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan, Benedict Wong as Wong, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie and Josh Brolin as Thanos. The film is in theaters now.
