The Mandarin's Rings are some of the most dangerous artifacts in the Marvel Universe. They grant the wearer uncomparable alien power that the Mandarin has used many times over to threaten the fabric of the universe and give Iron Man trouble. While Mandarin has mastered using all Ten Rings, it appears that even amateurs can hold unspeakable powers while possessing only one of the rings. Abigail Burns experienced the power of the Incandescence ring firsthand.

In 2012's Iron Man #18, by Kieron Gillen and Joe Bennet, Tony Stark was working with his brother Arno to transform Mandarin City into the city of the future. The city had recently fallen into legal limbo after the death of the Mandarin in Invincible Iron Man #526 by Matt Fraction, Salvador Larroca and Frank D'Armata. Mandarin's rings were locked up in a S.H.I.E.L.D. weapon facility, but they soon found their way out to search for new hosts.

Abigail Burns was a reporter who had an extreme hatred for Tony Stark's political policies. She considered herself an activist who was against everything that Stark stood for. The ring found her and declared that she possessed the necessary will before granting her flame powers and renaming her Mandarin-Seven. Burns would not stick with this name, as she felt her internet handle, Red Peril, better suited her new abilities.

Red Peril vs. Stark

She was discovered by Iron Man when Lord Remaker attacked Stark's press conference. Afraid that she would get blamed for the attack, she powered up and took the fight to Stark and his army of drones. The ring gave Burns the ability to fly, teleport, and project fire, as well as enhancing her reaction speed. She defeated Stark in their initial encounter and soon learned of the identities of the other ringbearers.

When Burns discovered how evil the other holders of the Mandarin rings were, she fought against them with Iron Man. When Lord Remaker escaped, Red Peril followed him and soon discovered his decapitated corpse. Malekith the Accursed was also gifted a ring and decided one was not enough. He severed Burns' hands and made off with her ring.

Stark offered to replace Burns' hands but she refused to accept his patronage. She returned to her career in journalism where she opted to do a story on Arno Stark, who had just been named the new city planner of Troy. Tony and Arno decided to use Red Peril in their fight against Malekith and the other ringbearers. The Stark Brothers designed a master ring and needed someone who had previously synced with a ring to control it. Tony designed a custom Iron Man suit for Abigail to wear that allowed her to use the power of the ring. While maybe not the strongest person to wear an Iron Man suit, Red Peril's power from the master ring made her one of the most unique. The group defeated Malekith and gave the rings to an alien civilization that could better protect them.

Although Burns' time with Tony Stark was at an end, his brother Arno had different plans. After developing a further relationship with Burns, he gave her the Incandescence ring that he had secretly stowed away.

When she last appeared, Red Peril appears to have more control of the ring than she did previously. She fashioned it into an earring, and it no longer alters her appearance when she uses it. The rest of the rings may have left Earth, but Burns retains power and control over one of the most powerful of the artifacts.
