Iron Man, Speed Racer, Hard Boiled: April 22nd Comic Reel Wrap

Actor Terrence Howard is the subject of an interview at Comics2Film, where he talked about why the role is important to him.  “I feel like now I am ready to really go and star in, and you know, carry some of my own films,” Howard said.  “I got to watch Jeff Bridges who is just beyond brilliant. His instinct towards truth in the character was only matched by Robert.  Robert would fight, fight, fight, fight and make sure every single scene — every moment of every scene — was perfect. He would not surrender no matter what.  Gwyneth, there’s a grace about her. She can’t tell a lie on camera. And when something’s not right she’s gonna defend her turf. She’s not going to grab onto that handrail of mediocrity, which is normally the basis of compromise. She stands up for truth.  Now I know what I need to make a film successful, creatively. I don’t care what it does in the marketplace. That’s somebody else’s job. But now I know to make sure that it has the historical authenticity that it needs, the integrity that it needs.”

His co-star Gwyneth Paltrow was among three women playing roles in comic book movies this summer (alongside Liv Tyler from “Incredible Hulk” and Maggie Gyllenhaal from “The Dark Knight”) interviewed by USA Weekend (with extras here), talking about providing some estrogen for the high powered flicks.  “Mine was definitely a testosterone-fest,” Paltrow said. “I was the only girl for miles, except for the women working in the wardrobe, hair and makeup departments. I would have time off when the guys would go blow things up in the desert, and every time I went back to work, they were happy to have a girl there. They had kind of forgotten that there were women in the world.”

Superhero Hype has some new production stills from the metal-minded Marvel movie.

CBR News has complete coverage of this weekend’s NYCC panel.

Meanwhile, Sci Fi Wire has additional quotes from actor Emile Hirsch about being surprised at the final product.  “It was so much more, because when you’re on the green screen, you have to substitute it with your imagination,” Hirsch said.  “The Wachowski brothers just have that much crazier of an imagination than I do. Maybe they have that particular visual crazy gift. So the wildest thing I could imagine pales in comparison to what they had already imagined and managed to put on screen, which is kind of part of their genius that they just are able to do that.”

Finally, producer Joel Silver talked to Collider about sequel possibilities.  “They have a great story idea for a sequel to this movie (‘Speed Racer’),” Silver said, “we have a great idea for a sequel if it makes sense to make it … We’re having a good time. I love working with them and it’s a great joy to have them in my life. They’re smart and funny and they love the kind of movies I love and they know how to make them like no one else. I look at this movie and can’t believe we created it. I can’t believe it exists.”

According to MTV, creator Frank Miller is in talks to direct an adaptation of the comic he created with Geof Darrow.

Speaking of Frank Miller, he was on hand at this weekend’s New York Comic-Con, and CBR News has the inside scoop.

There’s an interesting new rumor from Thomas Tull, founder, chairman and CEO of Legendary Pictures.  Apparently, Tull told students that the new Superman movie would refocus on the man of steel as “an angry god.”

Kryptonsite has a new image gallery of promotional photos from the upcoming May 1st episode “Apocalypse.”

Actress Selma Blair wants more for Liz Sherman in the sequel, or so she’s quoted in saying at Sci Fi Wire.  “The first time around, my character was stuck and sad,” Blair said.  “I was just wanted Liz to kick some ass!  We are introduced to Liz immediately as a much stronger character.  She’s with Hellboy, and she is more sure of her powers and using them. She’s much more a part of the story as a force in the B.P.R.D. instead of someone that isn’t willing to be there.”

CBR News has coverage of this weekend’s panels on the two properties.

Sci Fi Wire also quotes director Louis Leterrier who pooh-poohs rumors of internal strife regarding the project.  “It’s so unsettling, because it’s not true,” Leterrier said.  “Listen, when you have problems [on a film], you learn what to do. Everyone comes to an agreement where everyone agrees to say it was one thing or it was another thing. But [this controversy] is not a real thing, so I am saying one thing and [producer] Kevin [Feige] will say another thing, because it’s a non-issue.”

We can’t do this without you.  The rumors, the scoops, the set photos — they’re all fueled by passionate fans emailing in the goods.  The ones who ask, “What do you mean your sister’s dating somebody who works for Warner Brothers?”  The ones who know the code names of movie projects and scour city permit filings for them.  The devoted, the involved.  Fans, just like you.  Whatever you know, we wanna know, and whether you want your name shouted to the web’s rafters or kept closer than a classified report, we’ve got you covered like a comforter.  Broadcasting live from Los Angeles, this is your humble scribe Hannibal Tabu saying thank you for your time and indulgence, and [tagline due to return with new WGA drafts this week].
