WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Iron Man 2020 #5 by Dan Slott, Christos Gage, Pete Woods, & VC's Joe Caramagna, on sale now

Tony Stark has been defined in large part by his inventive nature, which has often lead the troubled genius to design powerful suits of Iron Man armor as a way to try and protect himself and the ever-vulnerable world around him. While this has led to many innovations over the years, Stark is always at work trying to one-up himself and elevate his capabilities beyond any human metric.

And in the middle of a robot revolution against his adoptive brother Arno Stark, Tony debuted a new armor in Iron Man 2020 #5, and it might just be the most impressive he's ever designed. With this uniquely, infinitely adaptable hard-hologram suit, Tony proves more than capable of countering Arno Stark and his own impressive power armor.

WHAT IS IRON MAN'S HARD-HOLOGRAM ARMOR?

Although Tony Stark has been considered dead by large swaths of the world, his consciousness has ended up in the virtual environment controlled by his AI assistant, Friday. Although Tony has believed himself to be just a copy of the original Tony, he's finally come to terms with the fact that he's the real Tony Stark. Reinspired, Tony uses the limitless potential of the digital space he found himself into craft every idea he can think of. Meanwhile, his robotic and human allies -- H.E.R.B.I.E., Machinesmith, Awesome Andy, Rescue, Bethany Cabe, Andy Bhang, Machine Man, and Jocasta - work together to find the resources needed to create a new human body for Tony.

After breaking into Bain Electronics, the group is able to complete the process and fully restore Iron Man to life. Tony's revealed to have also spent that time in the 13th Floor constructing perhaps his most impressive armor ever. The rest of the assembled heroes are initially confused by his confidence in his new suit when it doesn't appear that he's wearing one at all,  and this even extends to the villainous Arno. When Tony confronts Arno atop the Stark Space Station in a bid to prevent him from unleashing a mind-control virus onto the world, Arno initially assumes he's not wearing any real armor and unleashes a number of missiles against his resurrected brother.

But now, Tony's armor is now completely constructed of solid holograms. It's a virtual armor that can shift and change to match any problems that Tony confronts. With Friday still a part of the system as his A.I. assistant, Tony's durability is incredibly enhanced and capable of utilizing all sorts of weapons to bring down his targets. Using this holographic armor, Tony is able to easily overwhelm Arno and literally rip his armor apart with his bare hands, proving himself to be the true Iron Man.

Iron Man has always had a habit of designing new and exciting armors for every situation, but this hard-hologram armor could make for a very powerful tool for the hero going forward. The suit should be able to alter its properties for any given situation, allowing Iron Man to stand-up to anything that the Avengers run into conflict with in the future. While other armors Tony has utilized over the years have been capable of morphing and changing their properties to adapt to unexpected situations, this armor seems specifically suited for every kind of threat possible. The sheer range of weapons can allow Iron Man to respond with any number of options, and the connection to the 13th Floor's digital expanse gives Tony the perfect place to experiment with new ideas that his suit can then bring into the real world.

This suit may even have a connection to the armor teased by the creators working of Empyre, which suggested that the event would see Iron Man in new armor. The hologram suit might be perfect to counter the Cotati invasion too, as the nature of the suit prevents flecks of dirt from ending up in the suit and giving the Cotati something to manipulate inside it. Still, images from Marvel's upcoming Iron Man relaunch indicate that Stark will be wearing another new armor soon, so the holographic armor might not be long for this world.
