During the climax of Avengers: Endgame, Tony Stark/Iron Man used the Infinity Gauntlet to destroy Thanos and his army, losing his life in the process. However, actor Robert Downey Jr. says his character could still return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the future.

During an interview with Extra for Dolittle, Downey Jr. was asked about reprising the role. He replied, "Yeah anything could happen." However, he later added, "As far as I'm concerned I've hung up my guns and I'm good to let it go. I also think that Marvel is on this journey now where they're trying a bunch of other stuff. I'm excited for them to see how all of that goes. It's hard to project but we got a lot of other stuff we want to do."

At this time, there's no confirmation if Iron Man will ever return to the MCU again, though the character is seemingly set to play a role in Disney+'s What If series. Jeff Goldblum, who plays The Grandmaster in the MCU, previously said Downey Jr. would voice Iron Man in the series, though later reports indicate he misspoke.

Downey Jr. first played Stark in 2008's Iron Man, which proved a major success for the fledgeling Marvel Studios and helped launch the multi-billion dollar MCU. He reprised his role in two sequels to Iron Man and in various other films.

Directed by Stephen Gaghan, Dolittle stars Robert Downey Jr., Tom Holland, Jim Broadbent, Harry Collett, Emma Thompson, Selena Gomez, Craig Robinson, Rami Malek, Octavia Spencer, Ralph Fiennes, Kumail Nanjiani, John Cena, Antonio Banderas and Michael Sheen. The film is scheduled to hit theaters on Jan. 17, 2020.
