WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Iron Man #5, by Christopher Cantwell, Cafu, Frank D'Armata and VC's Joe Caramagna, on sale now.

In Iron Man's latest series, the cosmic Avengers villain Korvac has made his explosive return, with plans to ascend to godhood and reshape the Marvel Universe in his image. To that end, Korvac has assembled his own team of villains towards furthering his deadly delusions of grandeur. While populated mostly by Z-list Iron Man enemies, the antagonistic ensemble thwarted Tony Stark and Hellcat's initial attempts in an electric showdown in Oklahoma, leading Tony to form his own unlikely team of superheroes.

And after Tony Stark recruited Hellcat and Halcyon, a mutant whose heart rate can't go above 70-bpm, Iron Man #5 sees the Avenger bring together a team of inconspicuous allies for backup to avoid risking harm coming to a kidnapped James Rhodes at Korvac's mercy.

Scarlet Spider

Ben Reilly swinging through the city as the Scarlet Spider

Perhaps the most notable superhero that answers Tony's call to arms is the Scarlet Spider. A clone of Peter Parker made by the villainous Jackal to replace the original web-slinger before developing his own identity as Ben Reilly. Created by Gerry Conway, Ross Andru and Mike Esposito in 1975's Amazing Spider-Man #149, Ben became his own superhero and temporarily served as Spider-Man while Peter briefly retired.

Brought back to life by Jackal in the crossover event The Clone Conspiracy, Ben's mind was fractured and had him descend into villainy before his mind was eventually healed. When Tony recruits him, Ben is currently working as a night security guard at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Misty Knight

Misty Knight

Misty Knight is the only hero present who's not visibly perplexed and is the most seemingly competent of the heroes assembled. Created by Tony Isabella and Arvell Jones in 1975's Marvel Premiere #21, Misty is a private investigator with a bionic arm, designed personally by Tony Stark, that gives her superhuman strength.

Nonplussed by Tony's invitation, Misty is more concerned about Hellcat's condition after her brush with Korvac than the threat Iron Man has called the team together to face. As talk turns to business, Misty reminds Tony that she will be charging the tech entrepreneur her usual hourly rate as she takes point in leading the team on the field while coordinating with Iron Man as they go on their separate assignments.

Gargoyle

Marvel Gargoyle

While the first Gargoyle in the Marvel Universe was a Soviet agent and the first supervillain to confront the Hulk, a second, more heroic Gargoyle was introduced nearly two decades later. Created by J.M. DeMatteis and Don Perlin in 1981's Defenders #94, Isaac Christians sold his soul in exchange for his hometown becoming prosperous once again. With his soul bonded to a nearby gargoyle, Isaac helped the Defenders defeat a cult targeting Hellcat.

After his own stint on the Defenders and operating as a government-sponsored superhero, Gargoyle opened his own oyster raw bar in Greenwich Village, but he agrees to answer the call and join Iron Man's impromptu team.

Frog-Man

Another one of DeMatteis and Esposito's creations, Frog-Man, co-created with Kerry Gammill in 1982's Marvel Team-Up #121. Eugene Patillo's father was the villainous Leapfrog, who developed coiled boots that allowed him to leap great distances. After his father was imprisoned for his crimes, Eugene decided to use the old costume as a force for good and introduced himself as the "fabulous Frog-Man" and assist heroes in defending New York City.

While continuing his amateur crimefighting career, with varying degrees of success, Eugene has since taken up a job as a busboy at Gargoyle's oyster raw bar. Likely only tagging along with the elder superhero, Frog-Man proclaims that joining this rag-tag group makes this the best day of his life.
