WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Thor #8, by Donny Cates, Aaron Kuder, Matt Wilson and VC's Joe Sabino, on sale now.

In recent issues of Thor, The God of Thunder has found Mjolnir growing heavier with each passing day. In the most recent issue, Thor hurled the hammer down from space to Asgard's old home in Oklahoma, where a mechanic named Adam Aziz picked up the hammer and temporarily wielded the power of the Thunder God.

This mechanic then became a new God of Thunder. However, Thor also wrote Tony Stark's phone number on Mjolnir. When Iron Man arrived to see Adam Aziz with the hammer, Thor also showed up, and the two heroes faced off.

In Thor #8, Iron Man arrived in Oklahoma and told Adam to surrender the hammer. Lightning struck, and Thor arrived on Earth, leaving Iron Man temporarily stunned. Thor asked Adam to hand over the hammer, and he agreed. However, before Adam could hand Mjolnir to Thor, Iron Man swooped by and took it first. He said that he wouldn't give the hammer back to Thor until they talk first. Thor wanted to leave, as he had important things to deal with, but Iron Man wouldn't give in until Thor explained what is going on. Tony said he would take Mjolnir and run tests on it, but Thor was not in agreement.

Iron Man with Mjolnir

As tensions between the two Avengers mounted, Iron Man hit Thor in the face with Mjolnir. Thor did not return the blow but instead reminded Tony of his status as a God as he floated ominously above him, with the surrounding weather reflecting his growing anger. He told Tony that he was nothing more than a tin man in a lightning storm, a call back to a huge battle the two had in the past. Iron Man had a sudden change of heart and gave Thor his hammer back, not wishing to further provoke the powerful Avenger. Thor thanked Iron Man for not testing him again and said he understood why Tony felt the need to strike him and didn't hold it against the armored Avenger. After Iron Man promised to keep the secret that anyone can lift Mjolnir now, Tony revealed that he recorded a video of him hitting Thor with the hammer and dared Thor to one-up him, a challenge which the Thunder God readily accepted.

Surprisingly, This wasn't the only time that Iron Man lifted Mjolnir. In 1974's Avengers #122 by Steve Englehart, Bob Brown, and Mike Esposito, Iron Man lifted Mjolnir in outer space, but once he neared Earth's gravity field, his hand was pinned. This proved anyone could wield Thor's hammer where there is no gravity. There was also a time where Iron Man wielded Mjolnir as Stark Odinson in Warp World. This took place in Infinity Wars #3 by Gerry Duggan, Mike Deodato Jr., Frank Martin Jr., and Cory Petit, and happened as a result of Gamora creating a pocket universe when she had possession of the Infinity Gauntlet. This was technically a merging of Iron Man and Thor into one character, so while it didn't see Tony Stark lift Mjolnir proper, he was part of this amalgam and realized the power.

Luckily, Iron Man was able to fly away after his latest standoff with Thor. The last time, Iron Man was not so fortunate. This happened in 2007's Thor #3 by J. Michael Straczynski, Olivier Coipel, Mark Morales, Laura Martin, and Chris Eliopoulos, and was after the events of the first Civil War. Thor returned from the dead, during which he missed the entire events of the Civil War, where Iron Man created a clone known as Ragnarok, using a strand of hair he stole from Thor when they first met years before.

Iron Man arrived in New Orleans, where Thor was walking the ravaged streets, disappointed he was not there to help them turn back the hurricane that devastated the town. Tony commented on Thor dropping Asgard into Oklahoma and then demanded that Thor follow the registration accords. As he said, Thor would either work for the government or be against the government. At that time, Thor refused and confronted Iron Man about stealing his DNA to create a murderous clone. The two battled and Iron Man didn't stand a chance. Thor decisively defeated Iron Man, leaving him powerless and stranded far from home. Luckily for Tony, Thor took a higher road during their latest confrontation, preferring instead to deal in pranks instead of blows.
