Created by Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, Don Heck and Jack Kirby in 1963's Tales of Suspense #39, Tony Stark/Iron Man has pretty much always been characterized as a brilliant industrialist and playboy. However, when the Armored Avenger received his own cartoon series in 1994 as part of the Marvel Animated Universe's Marvel Action Hour, adapting Tony for younger audiences required walking a fine line. This is nowhere more evident than in the series premiere, "And the Sea Shall Give Up Its Dead," which opened with a risqué scene.

After the episode's initial opening, Tony Stark is introduced in a hot tub with a beautiful, bikini-clad woman named Veronica Benning. She tells her companion, "Stop fighting it, Tony! Come on! Work into the pain. Push, Tony! Harder! Boy, is that all you've got?" The scene then switches to Iron Man's labored face. Tony replies, "Did anyone ever tell you you're hard to resist?"

While the whole thing plays as them having sex, Iron Man soon reveals Benning is actually Tony's physical therapist, like she was in the comics of the time. She then gets behind Tony and has him kick his leg in the water. Then as James Rhodes/War Machine walks in, the camera pans over to him, lingering for a beat on Tony's bulging speedo. Disney+ has, for reference, rated 1994's Iron Man as being suitable for children over seven.

Overall, this opening interaction doesn't have much bearing on "And the Sea Shall Give Up Its Dead" as a whole, with the physical therapist really just ending up as collateral damage in Season 1 villain The Mandarin's attack on Tony Stark, which in this case involves a zombified submarine crew. However, 1994's Iron Man constantly explores and plays with Tony's relationships with women, even going so far as to have him seemingly get married in the Season 1 finale. That being said, there's never quite anything this risqué in the series again.

Still, this scene of Iron Man frolicking with his physical therapist in a hot tub is great at establishing Tony Stark as a playboy and layering something in for those older viewers watching the Marvel Action Hour with their kids. The whole scene is deeply sexual, but provides a surface-level justification that might just be enough to keep kids from realizing the double entendre taking place.

Iron Man is available to stream on Disney+.
