Iron Man 3 looks as it if will start off the second phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe on the right foot. Anticipated box office numbers are in, and the third Iron Man film is on track to match, and likely surpass Iron Man 2‘s opening haul.
Deadline reports Iron Man 3 is expected to have a $125 million or better opening weekend in North America. Considering Iron Man 2 debuted to $128 million, that seems like it should be expected. The site also says that definite interest in the Marvel film is higher even for The Avengers last year, and that film grossed $207 million in its first weekend.
If these tracking estimations are correct, then Iron Man 3 will be the first big blockbuster of 2013. So far the most successful movie this year has been Oz the Great and Powerful, another Disney project, and that film only opened to $79 million. Depending on how well Iron Man 3 performs, it could be the second most-successful movie of 2013 after just its opening weekend (Identity Thief, currently in the No. 2 spot, has made $131 million to date).
In addition to the big domestic numbers, Iron Man 3 is also garnering a massive global audience. However, Deadline also reports its U.K. premiere is being bumped from April 17 to April 18 because of Margaret Thatcher’s funeral. More than 2,000 guests have been invited to that April 17 ceremony, and a Disney spokesperson said, “London will basically be in traffic chaos and it would have been difficult logistically” to maintain the premiere’s original slot.
Directed by Shane Black, Iron Man 3 stars Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Ben Kingsley, Jon Favreau, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, James Badge Dale and Ashley Hamilton. The film opens May 3. Here’s the official synopsis:
Marvel Studios’ Iron Man 3 pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?
