Much of the fun in the Marvel Cinematic Universe comes in seeing how the reality of superheroes alters aspects of the world most fans might not consider. This kind of worldbuilding is great, but there are instances, such as with Iron Man 3, where it gets cut. In a deleted scene from the film, Joan Rivers tears the Iron Patriot suit apart on her fashion show, and while it might have been a bit awkward for the film's pacing, its place in rounding out the MCU is invaluable.

The scene, currently available on Disney+, depicts a fictionalized segment of Rivers' show Fashion Police, in which she and her co-hosts, George Kotsiopoulos, Kelly Osbourne and Giuliana Rancic, examine the newly announced Iron Patriot armor from the unique standpoint of the world of fashion. The armor is the same that James Rhodes wore previously, just repainted and rebranded to reflect the hero's higher-profile role working for the U.S. government.

Rivers quips about changing the name "War Machine," explaining that the "Iron Patriot" moniker was "just in case the paint was too subtle." This quip summarizes the scene, which, at nearly three minutes long, is easy to see as worthy of editing out. The four fashion experts give their different takes on the armor while Rivers rips it for being over the top. What proves most noteworthy about the scene, though, is its mere existence in the first place -- showing how the world of superheroes can leak into the world of Fashion Police helps sell the reality of the MCU.

It's not often that such a unique perspective is entertained, and it's almost a shame that the scene was cut. Later scenes in MCU installments would mine the same well for humor, such as Spider-Man: Homecoming showing the effect of superheroes on school-administered PSAs, and each instance rounds out the franchise to make it feel more real. Day-to-day life isn't fighting off alien invasions -- it's boring lectures in school and watching whatever is on the E! network.

This Iron Man 3 scene even manages to show an interesting philosophical range as the panel discusses Iron Patriot's role in combating terrorists. Kelly Osborne, an Englishwoman, finds the bold statement of nationality somewhat threatening. In contrast, Giuliana Rancic expresses her faith in the U.S. government's actions in "stamping out" terrorism, including an explicit endorsement of Vice President Rodriguez, who turns out to be a traitor manipulated by A.I.M. The deleted scene doesn't just show the diversity of superheroes' manifestation in the world, but the diversity of opinions in the MCU, as well.

The MCU is an exciting place, but these more banal looks at it are valuable to making the fictional world inhabitable for real-world audiences. Sadly, Joan Rivers passed just a year after the release of Iron Man 3, but fans are lucky to have her witticisms preserved in scenes like this as a unique and identifiable sign of its time.
