Following the release of a few promo spots for Marvel's Iron Fist Season 2, Netflix finally dropped a full-length trailer this morning, revealing a Danny Rand who has embraced his new role as defender of New York City. Already, it appears as if the criticisms of Season 1 have been addressed: The fight sequences are plentiful and improved, Danny has matured and possesses a clear objective, and faces a substantial foe in Davos.
With the Steel Serpent moving to seize the power he believes rightfully belongs to him, it appears as if Season 2 of the Marvel drama will dive deeper into Iron Fist mythology. We've already seen glimpses of the mystical city of K'un-Lun, and the shared history of Danny and Davos appears to be driving the story forward. But, on top of that, the trailer also depicts a petrified body of another Iron Fist, presumably in the present day. While there's no confirmation of the character's identity just yet, we may very well have gotten a look at Marvel Comics character Orson Randall.
Orson was introduced in 2007 in The Immortal Iron Fist #1, by Ed Brubaker, Matt Fraction and David Aja, as Danny's predecessor as the protector of K'un-Lun. As we know, the Iron Fist mantle is passed from one generation to the next, and Orson, who was born in K'un-Lun in the 1800s, wore the iconic yellow mask during World War I. He eventually learned that his chi could be channeled not just through his fists, but through weapons: While a good fighter, Randall would become recognized as the Iron Fist armed with dual pistols.
Due to the magic of Shou-Lao the Undying, Orson's life was prolonged, and he eventually found Danny Rand, the current Iron Fist. Randall was looking to make up for the failures of his past, and he became a mentor to Danny, teaching him about the ancient history of the Iron Fist and the possibilities of the power within him. While it may be merely a case of clever editing, the trailer seems to place the body in a tunnel of the New York City subway city, adding further credence that his is, indeed, Orson Randall.
In the first season of Netflix's Iron Fist, we caught a glimpse of another Iron Fist in a black-and-white reel as he fought soldiers in 1948. While some fans speculated that was our first look at Orson Randall, there was never any confirmation. However, the mummified Iron Fist featured in the Season 2 trailer reignites those questions. Although seen only briefly, the shot gives us a good look at the yellow mask of the Iron Fist, as well as the signature green suit. Of course, it's possible this is the same Iron Fist from the Season 1 footage.
It's difficult to say how the body of an Iron Fist may come into play in Season 2, but with Davos looking to gain the power for himself, it may be that he's siphoning energy from those who previously bore the title. Although it's all but guaranteed this Iron Fist -- Orson Randall or otherwise -- that doesn't mean we won't get to see more of him in flashback, or archival footage. Who knows, perhaps enough chi could be harnessed to bring a dead Iron Fist back to life.
There's a lot of history to mine in the Iron Fist mythos, and Season 2 appears to honor that aspect of the comic books. It would certainly be interesting to see Danny find a new mentor who could teach him to be an even better Iron Fist -- and inspire him to resume his search for K'un-Lun.
Arriving Sept. 7 on Netflix, Marvel’s Iron Fist Season 2 stars Finn Jones as Danny Rand, Jessica Henwick as Colleen Wing, Sacha Dhawan as Davos, Tom Pelphrey as Ward Meachum, Jessica Stroup as Joy Meachum, Simone Missick Misty Knight and introduces Alice Eve as Mary Walker.
