The fictional Eastern European nation of Sokovia looms large in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the site of the climactic battle of Avengers: Age of Ultron, which in turn inspired the Sokovia Accords, the international agreement at the center of the conflict in Captain America: Civil War. The country has been referenced in other films and television series, such as Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Jessica Jones, but it also plays an unexpected role in the second season of Iron Fist.

Although the Netflix drama's 10-episode sophomore outing focuses primarily on the plan by Davos (Sacha Dhawan) to strip the power of the Iron Fist from Danny Rand (Finn Jones), and the subsequent effort to steal it back, the backstory of private investigator/mercenary Mary Walker (Alice Eve) is among the more intriguing subplots.

An ex-special ops soldier, Walker is hired by Davos and Joy Meachum (Jessica Stroup) to learn all she can about Danny, and then debilitate and abduct him for the ancient transference ritual. However, a problem arises from Walker's dissociative identity disorder, which manifests in two distinct personalities, "Mary," a meek artist, and "Walker," the deadly, no-nonsense combatant. Mary tips off Danny to the surveillance, which threatens to derail the plan, but Walker gets the scheme back on track, only to later sell out to the highest bidder.

Walker's backstory is revealed in dribs and drabs over much of the season, culminating in the revelation that she was captured with her squad while on patrol in Sokovia. Placed in a block cell with only a view of the sky above, the was tortured and interrogated for 22 months as, one by one, the other seven members of the patrol were executed, frequently in front of her. It's then that her separate personalities emerge. When she was finally found by the Army, she was already free of her underground cell, and surrounded by the bloody bodies of her captors in what was later characterized as a "bloody mess." "Mary" had long assumed that "Walker," her protector, had freed them; "Walker," meanwhile, thought "Mary" had arranged for rescue. However, it's proposed that there's a third, more violent personality that was behind the massacre, operating without the knowledge of the others. "Bloody Mary," so to speak.

There's no indication of why Walker and her squad were in Sokovia, or when. The home country of Wanda Maximoff (aka the Scarlet Witch) and her late twin brother Pietro, Sokovia served as a research base for Hydra, so it's possible the U.S. Army was investigating those activities before, or even during, the events of Age of Ultron. However, it's specified that Walker and her squad were ambushed while on patrol, which may suggest a U.S. presence as a stabilizing force following the destruction of the capital of Novi Grad in the film. In the chaos that ensued, it's certainly plausible that rival factions would spring up in the fight for control, with U.S. and U.N. peacekeeping forces becoming prime targets.
