The stunt coordinator for Marvel's Iron Fist recently revealed that one of the hardest working actors on the show was Jessica Henwick, who portrayed Colleen Wing.
"You would be surprised. I got slammed by a lot of people after that came out, they had no idea," Bret Chan said on a new episode of the JAMCast podcast. "Johnny and myself were doing 21-22 hour days trying to make things working and having Marvel say 'Eh, no.'"
He added, "Everyone's fighting and the actor doesn't want to train and...'Guys, throw me a bone. Give me something to work with here.' That's probably why the best sequences were with Jessica Henwick because she trained four hours a day and she had zero martial arts experience."
Iron Fist debuted in March 2017 and served as the fourth Marvel Television program for Netflix following Daredevil, Jessica Jones and Luke Cage. The series starred Finn Jones as Danny Rand, alongside Henwick, Jessica Stroup, Tom Pelphrey and David Wenham. Iron Fist received generally negative reviews and was canceled in 2018 after two seasons, along with Netflix's entire lineup of Marvel series.
Marvel Studios has since relaunched its television division on the Disney+ streaming service, home of new Marvel series like WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki and the upcoming Hawkeye. It's unclear at this time if any of the characters who appeared on Netflix will be brought into the existing Marvel Cinematic Universe, and whether they will be played by the same actors, if so.
At the time, Jones compared the cancellation to losing a friend or close family member, saying, "You've spent years building this other world within yourself and sharing this other person with the whole world. Usually, with films or plays, you get to see that arc through. There's a journey. But with Iron Fist, it was like we just got to the peak. We were just getting there. We'd just turned the show around."
In addition to his credits with Marvel, Chan has coordinated stunts in the DC-affiliated Arrowverse, including episodes of Arrow, The Flash, The 100 and Supergirl. His current gigs include coordination on Warrior, Snowpiercer, Kung Fu and Halo.
Both seasons of Iron Fist are now streaming on Netflix.
