If the ratings for last night’s “Arrow” episode are any indication, the future for “The Flash” pilot looks bright — TV Line reports “The Scientist,” which featured the first appearance of Grant Gustin as Barry Allen, delivered the series its largest audience since February (3.17 million) and second highest rating of the season in the 18-49 demographic (1.1). And now, right on the heels of its strong night, rumors have begun to surface regarding casting for “The Flash’s” supporting characters, beginning with Barry Allen’s longtime love interest Iris West.
Bludhaven Banter has obtained unconfirmed character descriptions for Iris West and her father, Detective West, with a few changes from DC Comics canon. Iris is described as a 22-28 year old African-American psychology graduate student “as smart as she is beautiful” and Barry Allen’s best friend.
IRIS – 22-28 – African-American – As smart as she is beautiful, Iris is in grad school studying psychology. She’s also Barry’s mile a minute, fast-talking, quick-witted best friend. Her father, Detective West, took in Barry when his mother was murdered, and his father was wrongly accused and imprisoned for her murder. In a tough childhood for Barry, she was the one “not tough” thing. She’s unaware of Barry’s strong feelings for her.
DETECTIVE WEST – Late 40s to Early 50s – African American -Detective West is an honest, blue-collar cop who’s seen it all. A soulful, funny caring father to Iris, and a surrogate father to Barry, West came up through the foster system himself. He took in Barry after his mother’s murder and his father’s imprisonment. He believes in Barry and supports Barry’s efforts to prove his father’s innocence.
There are no details as to the extent of the roles in the upcoming series, but it looks like “The Flash” will continue the “Arrow” tradition of introducing new elements that bring a fresh take on classic DC characters.
“The Flash” pilot, written by DC Comics CCO Geoff Johns and “Arrow” producers Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg, currently has no scheduled air date. Gustin is set to return as Barry Allen in next week’s “Arrow” midseason finale, “Three Ghosts.”
