WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Invincible Season 1, Episode 8, "Where I Really Come From," available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.

While the animated Invincible has stayed relatively faithful to the original comic book series, there have been notable revisions to the story that have updated elements and altered character roles. Among the most notable characters to become a more active participant in the story is Invincible's mom and Omni-Man's wife Debbie Grayson. And more than just making Debbie a relatively passive observer to her husband's bloody atrocities, the animated series has Debbie playing a key role in stopping Omni-Man's most murderous rampage yet.

The comic book Debbie had her relatively oblivious to her husband's evil side, completely shocked when Omni-Man's role in murdering the Guardians of the Globe becomes public. Overhearing Nolan dismiss his wife as a little more than a pet to provide him with half-Viltrumite children, Debbie is heartbroken and spirals into an alcoholic depression and while many of these key, emotional beats are retained for the animated series, Debbie is no longer a character that completely falls for Nolan's lies at the start of the series hook, line and sinker.

With Nolan behaving strangely after emerging from the coma, he experienced after succumbing to his injuries he endured while murdering the Guardians, Debbie began to grow suspicious about whether he was telling the truth. After discovering Damien Darkblood's notebook containing his insight on Omni-Man's culpability in murdering the Guardians, Debbie conducted her own investigation which was not in the comic itself. And after confronting Nolan directly with her findings, the incident is what spurs Omni-Man to seek out his son and tell him the truth about his Viltrumite mission to conquer the planet.

And just as the animated series has Debbie accelerate Omni-Man's plans for Mark, she was also key in stopping him from murdering their son and continuing to wreak bloody havoc around the world. As Omni-Man brutally pummels Mark within an inch of his life, he recalls watching Mark play in a little league baseball game. Initially uninterested, Debbie beautifully articulates the joys of fatherhood to Nolan and it is this triggered memory that ultimately causes Nolan to relent in beating his son to death and flying away to parts unknown. And as Mark recovers from his beating, emerging from a coma two weeks later, it's Debbie that reminds her son how special and noble he is in standing against his father.

While the broad strokes of the original Invincible comic book series are largely retained, there is enough noticeable differences in the animated series that it stands on its own as a fresh take on the source material. From introducing Cecil Stedman far earlier than he originally appeared in the comic story to empowering Debbie to be more than a character relegated to the sidelines, the animated series changes are welcome ones. And though Debbie doesn't possess any conventional powers of her own, her appeal to Nolan's sensibilities as a father is what ultimately saves the world.

Invincible stars Steven Yeun, J.K. Simmons, Sandra Oh, Seth Rogen, Gillian Jacobs, Andrew Rannells, Zazie Beetz, Mark Hamill, Walton Goggins, Jason Mantzoukas, Mae Whitman, Chris Diamantopoulos, Melise, Kevin Michael Richardson, Khary Payton, Grey Griffin and Max Burkholder.
